Business Initiative Program

The Palmer Nickel and Cobalt Refinery Business Initiative Program encourages employee ownership and accountability for business success.

2011 saw an impressive increase in the interest of the program with 140 submissions (44 in 2010), resulting in 50 ideas being implemented during the 2010/11FY.

This year’s ideas resulted in safety, health and environment improvements to protect our people and the environment, added approximately 1,360 tonnes of additional nickel throughput and created about $20 million of value for the business.

Below are profiles of success stories within our organisation that were recognised at our 2011 Business Initiative Awards.

Greg Rodwell, Operations Supervisor

Greg was the winner of the Environment award, a new category introduced this year in recognition of the direction the business has taken over recent years.

The award promotes energy efficiency, clean technology and environmental improvements. Greg’s idea saved approximately an Olympic sized swimming pool of water going into the tailings facility each week.

This initiative assisted our dam level management and reduced the need to bring new water into the plant.

Jason Hayward, Operations Supervisor

Jason won our Bronze award for his dryer feed chute modification. The dryer feed chute transfers wet ore from the feed conveyors into the dryer shell to contact the heat from the air heater. The relatively small diameter of the chute is prone to blockages by build up of ore or rocks jamming.

Access to the hatches is via a small platform reached by a ladder, requiring two or three people who were in close proximity to contents of the chute when it was opened. Personnel were at risk of exposure to the release of hot combustion gases.

The implemented initiative saw the installation of a hydraulic ram to allow the hatch to be opened remotely. This allowed personnel to be clear of the area, separating them from the hazard and changing a risky job into a safe one.

Additionally, the task is now completed in a fraction of the time, significantly reducing dryer downtime.

Major prizes were awarded by Professor Palmer to recognise individual and collective innovation of employees who sought to continually improve and enhance the development and operations of the refinery.

Employee Assistance Program

Our employees have access to an Employee Assistance Program which offers the provision of confidential counselling services to them and their immediate family members.
