Community Relations

Queensland Nickel is committed to effectively engaging and building strong relationships with our community and key stakeholders. Our community relations strategy is vital to the long term operational and financial success of our Refinery.

Queensland Nickel is also a strong contributor to sustainable development in the region through our Community Investment program. As part of our commitment to contributing to the Townsville community, Queensland Nickel has recently entered into several sponsorship partnerships with a number of not-for-profit organisations.

Townsville City Council Schools Breakfast Program – Together with the Townsville City Council, Queensland Nickel is funding the School Breakfast Program which aims to promote healthy food choices for school children and teach them valuable life skills. The School Breakfast Program is currently operating in schools including Vincent, Heatley, Garbutt, Mundingburra, Railway Estate, Northern Beaches and Rasmussen.

Northern Beaches Festival 2010 – The Festival aims to showcase Townsville’s Northern Beaches communities by providing educational and cultural events and free family orientated entertainment. The Festival is held in May annually. Queensland Nickel is proud to be one of the Northern Beaches Festival’s major sponsors in 2010.

Townsville Basketball
– Queensland Nickel is one of the major sponsors of Townsville Basketball which has 16 junior representative teams representing Townsville throughout the state, a men’s U/23 team, a men’s and women’s senior state league team and the women’s National League team, the Townsville McCafe Fire.

North Queensland Science Education Centre
– The North Queensland Science Education Centre been sponsored by the Refinery since 1997. The centre is one of nine CSIRO Science Education Centres nationally and is the only centre outside a capital city. NQSEC offers a range of science education programs for primary and secondary students and aims to enthuse and inform participants about the ways in which science and technology affects their lives.  

North Queensland Ensembles (The Barrier Reef Orchestra) 
Queensland Nickel is proud to be the major sponsor of North Queensland Ensembles and the Barrier Reef Orchestra for the 2010 and 2011 seasons. The organisation aims to provide the Townsville and North Queensland region with musical experiences for musicians and audiences which would normally be unavailable outside a capital city.

North Queensland Razorbacks – Queensland Nickel has partnered with the Razorbacks for the second year in a row. The Razorbacks are a community based football club which provides regional elite players with the opportunity to compete at a professional level.
